Ace Atkins photo by JAY E. NOLAN
Ace Atkins

Ace Atkins covers crime for the Tampa Tribune. He was born in Alabama and played defensive end for the undefeated 1993 Auburn University football team where he was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

After graduation, Atkins worked as a correspondent for the St. Petersburg Times before becoming a staff writer at the Tampa Tribune. He has written profiles of killers, con men and carnival workers intertwined with the daily coverage of Tampa crime.

Atkins also returns to the Deep South frequently, to hang out in juke joints and roadhouses and to interview aging blues musicians. While in Greenwood, Miss., Atkins spent time at the place many believe is the old Three Forks Store – the very location where blues legend Robert Johnson was murdered 60 years ago. He also tracked down new information on a legendary blues producer in Chicago in the winter of ’99. He takes those experiences and couples them with elements of Southern folklore to create a mystery series unlike any other. Atkins is currently working on the third Travers’ novel, to be set in New Orleans, Memphis and the Mississippi Delta. (Author's Website)
