William Cobb, a native of Demopolis Alabama, attended Livingston State College and Vanderbilt University. He has had a long and distinguished career as teacher and writer-in-residence at the University of Montevallo. A novelist and playwright, Cobb has published six books of fiction and numerous short stories and essays. He has also had three plays produced off-off Broadway in New York. His early short story, "The Stone Soldier", was named best story of the year by Story Magazine. His novel A Walk through Fire (1992) was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Cobb's short stories have appeared widely in a variety of magazines and journals including Story, Comment, Southern Living and The Arlington Quarterly.
