Margo Manning

Margo Manning

Margo Manning is the granddaughter of William S. Harley, Co-founder of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. With over 60 patents, Mr. Harley’s innovations helped shape this great company and the future of the motorcycle industry. Following graduation from Birmingham-Southern College, Margo pursued a career in the arts: as art teacher for the Department of Youth Services-Chalkville and as Company Manager and Associate Development Director for a regional theater company in Milwaukee. Margo appeared in a documentary for public television, “Harley and Davidson, The Friendship Behind the Motorcycle.”

Margo grew up in her grandparent’s home located a few blocks from the original factory. The streets of the neighborhood served as branches of the extended Harley-Davidson Motor Company family tree. The founders lived in the same neighborhood as did most of the employees at the factory. Margo’s uncles rode their motorcycles from the factory and her mom and grandmother served up lunch. As they sat around the table and passed the freshly prepared food, her uncles and their friends “talked shop.”

Family recipes and cooking was a centerpiece of family gatherings. Celebrating holidays together, the Harley and Davidson families shared favorite recipes that comprised these annual dinners.

Included in the cookbook are some of the Harley and Davidson family’s most treasured recipes. Some handed down after the families emigrated to the United States in the mid-1800’s. Most of the recipes can be combined with others to form a menu. Almost all can be embellished and adapted the way our mothers used to cook. One attribute passed down from Margo’s grandfather and his parents before him, is the notion that it is OK to take a certain amount of risk as well as to be creative.

Margo Manning and Carol Lange, granddaughter of William Davidson are currently traveling to promote the cookbook and presenting some of their family recipes.  (The Author)
