Kirk McNair

Kirk McNair began his career as a writer while he was still a student at Ramsay High School in Birmingham. He threw papers before dawn and worked evenings on the desk at the Birmingham Post-Herald, picking up the craft of writing from the veteran newspapermen in his midst. He continued in the newspaper business through college and afterwards returned to the Post-Herald where he wrote his way into the sports department and soon to the position of assistant sports editor. Then one day the call came from Tuscaloosa.

McNair has been closely connected to the inner circle of University of Alabama football for more than 35 years, first as a writer and director of sports information under Coach Paul Bryant and later as the founder and editor of the magazine ‘Bama: Inside the Crimson Tide and the web site bamamag.com. In his book What it Means to be Crimson Tide, McNair combines his unrivaled knowledge of Alabama football with his considerable skills as a writer. Through 62 interviews with former players from the 1930s to the present, he shows what playing football at Alabama means to the athletes. For the first time readers can experience the storied program from the perspective of the men who played the game.

McNair and his wife Lynne Pearson McNair have been married for 43 years, perhaps because they have never sat together at an Alabama football game. They have two children, three grandchildren, and a history of assorted dogs, cats and tropical fish. They live in Tuscaloosa and retreat to their cabin on Yellow Creek in the off-season.
