![]() William Miller William Miller is the author of numerous children's picture books, including the award-winning Zora Hurston and the Chinaberry Tree (1994), Richard Wright and the Library Card (1997), and Night Golf (1999), all published by Lee & Low Books. Miller was raised in Anniston, Alabama. He received his doctorate in English and American Literature from the State University of New York at Binghanton. He resides in York, Pennsylvania, where he teaches creative writing and African-American literature at York College. Miller's books have won numerous awards and praise. Zora Hurston and the Chinaberry Tree was a named a 1996 Reading Rainbow selection, an American Bookseller "Pick of the List" selection and a Notable Children's Trade Book in the Field of Social Studies. Horn Book Magazine praised the book as a "lyrical affirmation of life's unlimited potential." Fredrick Douglass: The Last Day of Slavery (1995) received the prestigious Paterson Poetry Prize, and was chosen as a Notable Children's Book by Smithsonian magazine. Publishers Weekly noted "the success of this penetrating book lies in Miller's ability to convincingly convey the abolitionist Frederick Douglass's thoughts and feelings . . . .
