"Phyllis Alesia Perry was born in Atlanta and grew up in Tuskegee, Alabama. She graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in communications. She has worked for several Southern newspapers, including The Alabama Journal in Montgomery, where she was assistant city editor. Perry was a member of the Journal's team which in 1988 was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the Distinguished Service Award of the Society of Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi, for an investigation of Alabama's infant mortality crisis.
