Ann Vaughan Richards was born in Elba, Alabama, into a family whose ancestors on all sides flocked to that one spot when Alabama became a territory. Why they came and why they stayed are questions she often ponders, especially now that she has returned to her hometown after forty years in other states. In her case, distance merely served to intensify her admiration for her ancestors and to strengthen her family ties. So it is not surprising that her novel, Miss Woman, is about family ties and small town life. It is also not surprising that it was written at a time in her life when age and frailty were endangering the generation who reared her. Ann has been married for a very long time to a very patient scientist. They have two grown daughters who are independent, intelligent, and splendidly sassy. As to her own personality, Ann says, " I tend to be reclusive, unconventional, and quirky--all of which are the more positive of my family traits." Bibliography: |
