Elizabeth Schafer

Elizabeth Schafer grew up in Auburn where football and athletics, especially swimming and equestrian sports, were an important part of her childhood. She heard many stories about Auburn's legendary coaches and players, attended games, met inspiring athletes, and became interested in football’s historical development and legacy at Auburn. Working in Auburn’s archives during graduate school, she became aware of rarely-seen scrapbooks, manuscripts, photographs, and other memorabilia, documenting the early decades of football on campus.

 

Schafer received three history degrees from Auburn, including a Ph.D. in the history of technology and science. She also earned a M.A. from Hollins University in Virginia, studying literature and creative writing. Schafer has written several books and published articles, literary criticism, book reviews, and lesson plans in numerous anthologies, reference books, journals, and magazines, including Great Athletes: Twentieth Century, The Fifties in America, American National Biography, Encyclopedia of 20thCentury Technology, The Encyclopedia of the American Civil War, Organization of American Historians Magazin! e of History, Cobblestone, Faces, Calliope, Odyssey, Footsteps, Appleseeds, and Women Who Made a Difference in Alabama.
