A native of Decatur, Alabama, Jeanie Thompson attended the University of Alabama where she took her undergraduate degree in English and her MFA in Creative Writing. She was one of the first students of the MFA program, and studied with poet Thomas Rabbitt. During that time she founded the Black Warrior Review along with her fellow students in the program. She served as editor from 1974-1976. Since graduating Jeanie has taught at the University of New Orleans, the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts, and St. Martin's Protestant Episcopal School, as well as in the poetry-in-the-schools program in New Orleans and in Alabama. Jeanie Thompson has published several collections of poems. Her collection of poems, Witness, won a Benjamin Franklin Award from the Publishers Marketing Association in 1996.
