Elizabeth Ash Velez is a writer, poet, teacher, and mom who lives and works in Washington, DC. She teaches English and Women's Studies at Georgetown University and is the academic coordinator of the Community Scholars Program there. (Community Scholars is a program for high-risk students at Georgetown aimed at recruiting and retaining bright students who might not otherwise apply to Georgetown.) Velez also writes for People magazine. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and grew up in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Texas, and Mississippi. She has a BA in philosophy from Austin College in Sherman, Texas, an MA in Teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a MA in English from Georgetown University. She has taught in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, the south Bronx, and Harlem. She has been teaching and working at Georgetown for about fifteen years. Velez is the mother of two sons, Stephen (30) and Nicholas (18). Stephen teaches third grade in the DC public schools, and Nicholas is a first-year student at the University of Chicago. Velez and her husband, Larry, poet and speechwriter have been married for 32 years. Velez believes that poetry should belong to everyone and hopes that this book will bring the consolation and comfort of poetry to wider audience-she sees the book as a continuation of her role as a teacher.
