Watt Key
He was born in 1970, the first of seven children raised
by his parents in Point Clear, Alabama. Now mostly a retreat for Mobileans,
Point Clear was a remote stretch of low-lying coastline when he was a child.
he spent his winters building tree forts, hunting, fishing and trapping in
the swamp. His summers consisted of sleeping outside and fishing Mobile bay.
Books and stories were a large part of his childhood
entertainment. His dad read Kipling and Poe and Doyle to him nightly. His
mom saved a story she says was his first. After high-school he
attended Birmingham-Southern College where he began to write seriously.
By the time he graduated from college, he had finished two terrible novels
that he thought were great. He returned to south Alabama where he met his wife,
Katie and acquired a cheap piece of swampland 5 miles into the Alabama River
delta.
